What inspired you to start your business?
When I met my husband, Rick, he had terrible allergies to grass, and when mowing the lawn, he'd come in every twenty minutes to put a cold cloth over his eyes just to be able to see. I said, "You need Alfalfa." He began taking Shaklee's, and voilà! He could mow the grass without his eyes watering. He was impressed and would tell others about his relief.
How did you choose your business name?
I remember my father remarking, "You've got the Life of Riley" when I or one of my seven siblings grumbled about cleaning our room and doing housework.
"Having the Life of Riley" means living a carefree life of leisure and fun, without chores. Sounds idyllic to me! I named my business "Life of Riley Living"
What was the “aha” moment that made you take the leap?
On my 42nd birthday, I realized that after 23 years as a police officer, I was facing another decade before I could retire with a pension. The idea choked me. Rick said ''Quit, and have a Shaklee business. I don't want you being a cop anyway." So, I quit the department, and a huge weight was lifted from me.
Did you always know you wanted to be an entrepreneur, or did it happen unexpectedly?
Business has been an interest of mine forever; I read business journals for the sheer enjoyment of it. Business is creative! Business is integral to vibrant communities.
What values guide your decisions and customer experience?
Dr. Shaklee brought to market an organic cleaning product in the 1960s, before the term "organic" was widely recognized as a standard for sustainable practices. I chose Shaklee for their commitment to the environment, being the first Climate Neutral Company in the world. Their rigorous testing of raw ingredients is pure wisdom.
How do you want people to feel after interacting with your business?
I want them to know they are supporting our planet and their good health by choosing Shaklee, as well as supporting a small business.
What’s your long-term vision for your brand?
Turn "sick care" into health care, one person, one community at a time. "Community Marketing" cultivates connections that encourage one another to live better and change lives one choice at a time.
How do you define success for yourself?
Knowing that the company I partner with is shaping the way forward in wellness for people, animals, and our planet, and guiding others to be in business, too.
What’s a milestone you’re most proud of?
Tenacity. I'm in my 27th year of holistic health with marketing breakthrough products in nutrition, home and personal care.
